Padma Shri Thangam E Philip, considered the pioneer of the hotel and catering industry in India and a nutrition expert, passed away at
her native place in Kottayam, Kerala, on Wednesday. She was 88 years old.

Philip was the founding member and principal emeritus of the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai.
In 1955, Philip joined the then College of Catering and Institutional Management in the old army barracks of Bhawan's College campus, Andheri. She was part of the group of teachers who prepared the first batch of students for a career in the industry.
After the catering college campus shifted to its present location at Shivaji Park, Dadar, Philip became the principal from 1961-1986.
During her distinguished career, she has been the recipient of many prestigious awards. She was awarded a Padma Shri by the government of India for the development of hotel and catering education. She was also one of the few Indian women to get the FAO Ceres Medal.
