According to Narendra Somani, CMD, Bhagwati Banquets and Hotels and chairman, Gujarat chapter, Hotel and Restaurant Association, "By 2011, the hospitality industry in Gujarat is going to turn to a buyer's market from a seller's market. The rise in hotel rooms supply will be such that a 5-star room which is currently available for an average of $ 200, will be available for only $ 80-100. The rise in supply is expected to bring down hotel room tariffs by 50 per cent."The Hotel and Restaurant Association – Western India, which is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year, was incorporated to promote and look after the interests of the Hospitality Industry in Western India, which was in its nascent stage in the 50s.
"There are around 15-20 3-star to 5-star hotels coming up in Gujarat including major brands like Sheraton, Ista, Crown Plaza, Hilton and Hyatt in next two years. Currently, there are roughly 2,500 hotel rooms in the state but another 3,000-4,000 are being added," said Somani. Meanwhile, across the country, at least 20,000-25,000 new hotel rooms will be added by 2010, said Sumit Kothari, chairman, Diamond Jubilee committee, HRAWI.
"In the next three years, about one lakh new hotel rooms are being added of which 30,000-40,000 are under construction. These are mostly in the 3-star to 5-star categories," Kothari added. To augment the green cover, the Association plans to carry out tree planting activities in the cities of Pune, Ahmedabad, Indore, Silvassa, Goa and Mumbai. The Association envisions planting around 300 trees in the five cities and their neighboring villages with the help of local NGO.
