Sterling Planet is now supplying the 685-room InterContinental New York Barclay with 100 percent wind energy through renewable energy certificates.
The Barclay is among the first New York hotels to source 100 percent wind energy. Sterling Planet is supplying the Barclay with more than 6.3 million kilowatt-hours of Green-e Energy certified RECs from nationwide wind sources, offsetting all of the hotel's use of conventional electricity. This amount of renewable energy represents enough electricity to power about 500 average U.S. households for a year.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this move to wind energy, a zero-emissions electricity source, results in the avoidance of approximately 8.6 million pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. The annual environmental benefit of the Barclay’s wind energy purchase compares to 869 passenger cars taken off the road, 969 acres of pine forests storing carbon, or 1,530 tons of waste recycled instead of sent to a landfill.
