Banrsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in collaboration with the Waikato University, New Zealand took the lead to organize the first International Conference jointly from 19th to 22nd January, 2011. The conference aimed at the role and scope towards growth in Tourism and Hospitality Practices in India and across the Borders.
At the inauguration the Guests of Honor were Mr. Anand Prakash, I.A.S., Principal Secretary, Govt of
NCT of Delhi and Mr. M.D. Kapoor, Secretary General, FHRAI and The Chief Guest was Mr. S. K. Misra, I.A.S., Former Principal Secretary to the then Prime Minister and recipient of Padma Bhushan Award. They collectively applauded BCIHMCT for organising this International Conference and desired that the institute should continue with this endeavor undertaken by them. Mr. S K Misra in his brief deliberation talked about the development of tourism after 1947 when India gained Independence and briefly covered the development of Tourism and Hospitality Sector from then till date. He made recommendation that academics and Industry should work together and take tourism and hospitality to greater heights along with training and development of Human Resources for professional management of this service Industry.
Thereafter Mr. RK Bhandari, Principal BCIHMCT and Joint President IHTTRC and Mr. Asad Mohsin, Joint President IHTTRC, University of WAIKATO Management School, New Zealand declared open the Conference with their welcome address followed by the presentation of the Conference Theme.
The conference commenced with the keynote address by Mr.Yole Mansfeld University of Haifa, Israel who spoke on “Managing Travel Risk Perception – A Knowledge Management based Solution. The keynote address was followed by eleven parallel tracks over a period of three days. The speakers were from various Universities across the World like New Zealand, Australia, Israel, Korea, Spain, Germany, UK, USA and India.
Papers presented in the parallel track on each day highlighted on the subjects like:-
Each session was chaired by a chairperson conducting the proceedings and concluding the deliberations of each speaker presenting their respective papers. The deliberations were made on areas like Cultural Tourism, Rural Tourism, Employee Attrition and Retention, Perceptions of Educators and Industry Practitioners on Management Skills and Competencies, Resort Destinations and Prospects of Luxury Hotels Globally, Overseas Holiday Culture and Retention of Customers with Hotel Loyalty.
The next on keynote speaker Dr. Bruce Prideaux, James Cook University, Australia gave his presentation on “Advancing Tourism Research through Excellence” and discussed various methodologies on conducting research programs which is the need of the hour today. He stressed that Research programs will emerge with new innovative ideas for promotion of Tourism and Hospitality globally.
The highlight of the third day was the much awaited panel discussion session comprising of eminent
personalities from Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Academics and Management experts. The title of the panel discussion and interaction was, BUILDING STRONGER LINKS BETWEEN EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY. The panelists were Mr. Andrew J. Ryder, Jaypee Hotels, Mr. Saurabh Khanna, The Park Hotel, Mr. Douglas Peter, Hotel The Lalit from the Hostel Industry. The Academics was represented by Retd.) Maj. Gen. B.N. Kaul , Amity University, Dr. Vinnie jauhari, IIMT, Prof. Gopalakrishnanin, WGSHA, Manipal, Mr. Amitabh Dey , NSHM, Durgapur and Dr.Tim Lockyer , Waikato University, New Zealand. The moderators at the panel discussion were Mr. R.K. Bhandari, Principal, BCIIHMCT and Mr. Asad Mohsin, President IHTTRC, University of WAIKATO Management School, New Zealand
After a healthy interaction between the panelists and the moderators, suggestions were invited from the
audience who interacted enthusiastically and suggested various measures for integrating academics and industry for professional development of future Managers passing out from the Institute and taking up managerial positions in the industry.
It was unanimously recommended by all that:
1. The Hotel Management Institutes both under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and
Private Sectors should integrate together on one platform and constitute a Forum to exchange
ideas and form strategies to exchange ideas and methods of enrichment of Hotel Management
Education in the Country meeting international standards.
2. A Joint Action Committee should be formed between the Academics and the Hospitality Industry
where methodologies are evolved for Industry Academics integration in the mutual interest of all.
3. FHRAI being the National Apex Body in the country should come forward and initiate the lead as it
has all, that is the Hotel Industry, Academics, Travel and Tourism etc, as their members and their
suggestions and contributions should be inculcated.
During the conference the third issue of the INDIAN JOURNAL OF APPLIED HOSPITALITY AND
TOURIMS RESEARCH was released. The Journal contains the papers from 8 RESEARCH Scholars and
ONE THEMATIC ARTICLE BY PROF. ABJIT MUKHERJEE AND RADHA R. on HR DIFFICULITIES IN
RECRUTING ENTRY LEVEL STAFF: A CASE STUDY WITH REFERENCE TO HOTEL MANGEMNT
CURRICULUM was the highlight of the Journal.
The Conference Proceeding were complied in a book form which had presentations made by 9 Indian
Scholars and 16 Foreign Scholars from NEWZELAND, AUSTRALIA, GERMANY, SPAIN, UK, TAIWAN ,
SOUTH KOREA.
BCIHMCT during the conference exhibited their culinary skills highlighting various cuisines during the
conference lunches and dinners prepared by the students guided by their supervising Chefs. Conducted
Tour to Agra for the Foreign Delegates was organized on the last day and the delegates expressed their
happiness on this visit where amongst other Tourism products the Taj Mahal was seen by them.
The detailed report on the proceedings of this International Conference is being sent to all the Hotels,
Tourism Departments and Institutes and as well as to the Travel Trade Industry in addition to all the
Universities in the country.
