TECH | Social Media | OTAs | Expedia begins posting hotels' ‘walk scores’

Expedia has begun posting hotels' rating based on the ability of guests to walk to and from various points of interest, in an effort to appeal to health-conscious guests or those traveling without a vehicle.

So-called walk scores will be posted on AARP Travel Center, a travel-planning website for members of the retiree organization that is run by Expedia. Walk scores are intended to help consumers visually locate their hotel on a map while showing local points of interest surrounding the property, including restaurants, shopping, transportation options, ATMs and other tourist attractions within walking distance. High walk scores will be awarded to hotels located near to businesses, restaurants, shopping and banks and does not require a car to get around easily.

Expedia is also adding TripAdvisor reviews to the AARP Travel Center site.

"We want to ensure that AARP members have the tools they need to find the right hotel for their trip, and integrating TripAdvisor and walk score should help them do that," says Thaddeus Hanscom, vice president of Expedia Affiliate Network Americas. "With our investment in the AARP booking platform, we're enabling better purchase decisions—and that means more than just cost and time savings. It means superior travel experiences for AARP members."
