Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts recently held the groundbreaking ceremonies of its two properties in Sri Lanka. The 30 storied Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo with 661 rooms will open in mid-2015 while Shangri-La's Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka with 315 rooms including 24 suites will open in 2013. Speaking on the occassion, Madhu Ramachandra Rao, Executive Director, Shangri-La Asia said, “The Shangri-La hotel's entry into Sri Lanka will change the entire paradigm of the local hospitality industry while making Sri Lanka a preferred tourism destination among high end international holiday makers.” “Sri Lanka is a country of unsurpassed natural beauty and rich in cultural heritage. Both Shangri-La hotels strategically fit into the group’s ongoing expansion plans to link the Indian subcontinent and our South East Asia developments,” said Greg Dogan, President and CEO, Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. The Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo will include a sushi bar, steakhouse, seafood market, Indian restaurant, Islamic restaurant as well as a sky lounge on the top floor. The all day-dining venue will offer food concepts including a restaurant called Straits Spice Market, a take-out deli, Irish pub, tea lounge and wine/cigar room. A health club, spa with eight treatment rooms, an outdoor junior pool and two outdoor tennis courts will offer recreational facilities at the property. Facilities at Shangri-La's Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka will include ten treatment rooms, a beauty salon and a health club. A dive centre, a kids’ club, a pool plus additional free pool, two tennis courts and retail facilities will offer recreational opportunities for business travellers and families. Food and beverage outlets at the property will include a lobby lounge, an all day dining restaurant, Asian specialty and North Indian restaurants as well as two pool bars and golf clubhouse lounge. As per the earlier plans, the Colombo hotel was expected to start in 2014 and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts was to spend USD 500 million on these projects. “The cost has slightly gone up. Between the two projects it's about USD 550 million,” said Madhu Rao, Chief Financial Officer, Shangri-La Asia. In 2011, Hong-Kong based leisure group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts announced the purchase of ten acres of government owned land facing the Galle Face Green promenade.
