Domino's Pizza, Inc. aims to build bigger business abroad and return to net store expansion in the U.S. this year. The pizza-delivery chain's international business has been a driver for growth recently. With the U.S. fast-food market saturated and consumer demand contracting, many U.S. restaurant chains are looking to emerging economies for long-term expansion.
Domino's is up against competitors like Yum Brands Inc.'s Pizza Hut and Papa John's International Inc., which already have substantial presence in countries such as China. Domino's said its fastest-growing market is India, where it reached 400 locations last year. “International is a very big part of the equation. Domino's Pizza benefits from scale, but also with a long-run rate for growth since we only have 11 per cent estimated market share internationally in off-premise pizza,” said Patrick Doyle, Chief Executive, Domino's Pizza, Inc. in The Wall Street Journal report by Annie Gasparro. Domino's expects the number of its stores internationally to surpass that of the U.S. some time this year. On January 1, 2012 Domino's had 4,835 international stores, compared with 4,907 domestic stores. It said it would open 350 to 450 global net new units a year, up from the prior 250 to 300 guidance.
