The Rajarhat Salt Lake new town corridor in Kolkata, is seeing heavy interest from hoteliers as a number of hotels are coming up in the region including brands like Starwood Hotels and Resorts and Accor. These hotels are planning to target the growing corporate sector of the region and MICE segment which would have a substantial demand with time.
"Rajarhat is the future of Kolkata," said Atul Bhalla,
CEO of hospitality division of Srishti Group in a report by Economic Times. The company is developing Westin by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, considered to be the tallest hotel in India. "Unlike places like Alipore which do not have an adequate infrastructure, the expansion and growth would come from this part of the city in the coming years," said Bhalla. Rajarhat is the closest locality to the airport and in last five years there have been various commercial and retail projects, which have increased the value of this area. "Soon it will become a sub-city to Kolkata," added Bhalla. Similarly the Rs 250-crore Novotel, brand owned by French hospitality giant Accor, is launching a 300-room hotel project in Rajarhat. According to Apurva Salarpuria, Executive Director of Salarpuria Group which is developing the property, the planned layout of New Town area was key in getting the international hospitality brand interested. Local players, like De Sovrani, too see an opportunity here. Officials of Salt Lake-based real estate agent DC Paul and Sons, who owns 'De Sovrani' brand, say within one week of starting operations from sector 1 of Salt Lake City, the hotel already has more than 25 percent occupancy. These hotels are also looking at hosting business conferences and serve as a meeting center for the IT sector. "This area will become the meeting and conferences destination for east India, and most of these luxury hotels will benefit from the same," said Salarpuria. On similar lines, Westin boasts of having the largest banquet facility in eastern India. The 16-17 percent year-on-year growth of hotel industry in Kolkata mainly comes from the Salt Lake-New Town and Rajarhat areas, according to Bhalla of Westin.
