At the 3rd India International Hotel, Travel & Tourism Research Conference held at Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (29- 31 January, 2013) the research paper presented by Mr. Bhupesh Kumar and Mr. Tim Lockyer revealed that Delhi witnessed a national holiday for almost two weeks, which was capitalized by Hong Kong and Singapore, by offering themselves as cheap holiday destinations.

Also, hotel management accepted the consultants’ estimates on the number of additional hotel rooms required and increased the room rates to a much higher level than normal which caused withdrawal of bookings. This research proved that hotel management needs to undertake careful and continuous environmental scanning, especially at times of mega-events, to verify that the information that is being provided by the ‘so called experts’ is actually credible. The Hotel Industry needs to keep a constant vigil on all the factors that impact upon the hotels as tourism mega-events may not necessarily mean massive benefits for the hospitality industry.
