The Odisha government will set up two more State Institute for Hotel Management (SIHM) at Khallikote in Ganjam district for South Odisha and Balasore in North Odisha in the current financial year.
The Food Crafts Institute in Balangir has already been upgraded as a State Institute of Hotel Management.
This was informed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who along with the Union Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi, inaugurated the new campus of Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) at Dumduma here on Thursday.
IITTM initially started functioning in 1996 at Sishu Bhawan square. Patnaik said the Government plans to set up these two institutions in current financial year to meet the demand for human resources in the hospitality sector.
“The hospitality industry needs about two lakh trained persons every year but only 27,000 qualified persons are available,” he said, adding that the Government is trying to bridge the skilled manpower shortage by setting up these two SIHMs and also upgrading the Balangir FCI. On the occasion, the Chief Minister urged Chiranjeevi to allow admission to the upgraded SIHM at Balangir in the three-year bachelor degree courses in hotel and hospitality management from the 2013-14 academic year for benefit of students in KBK region.
Patnaik also appealed to Chiranjeevi to set up a zonal centre of the Culinary Institute of India that would be coming up at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Speaking on the occasion, Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister Srikant Jena said the entire State of Odisha should be developed into a tourism circuit because it is a treasure trove of destinations. Among others, State Tourism Minister Maheswar Mohanty, MP Prasanna Patasani and IITTM Director Manjula Choudhary were present.
