NEWS | Top-end bars, hotels hunt for mixologists to serve new cocktails

If bartenders are the guys who serve you drinks, mixologists are the elite who concoct exotic ones and create a unique tippling experience.

Arijit Bose started his career as a bartender in 2003 at Agni bar at Delhi's The Park hotel after graduating from the Indian Institute of Hotel Management, Mumbai. After stints at beverage consultancy Tulleeho, liquor major Bacardi Martini India and as a national consultant at United SpiritsBSE 2.92 %, Bose, who chose to specialise in mixology, decided to set up his own company Getafix, which is into bar training, handling events and parties, and consultancy.
"The bar space is becoming increasingly important for the food and beverage industry in India with more and more professionals choosing to specialise not just in plain vanilla bartending but graduating to the super-specialised genre of mixology," says Bose. A bartender is a person who serves drinks, mixes cocktails, maintains supplies and even checks legal drinking age of customers. A mixologist specialises not just in mixing cocktails and creating new ones; he or she can also graduate to molecular mixology to create even more exotic cocktails with more varieties and greater intensities of flavour.
