NEWS | New Report Shows the Continuing Positive Impact of Tourism on Oregon’s Economy

Just in time for National Travel and Tourism Week—a celebration of the wide-ranging impacts of tourism - an independent report by Dean Runyan Associates estimates that travel spending, employment and earnings within the Oregon travel and tourism industry were all up in 2012 over 2011. The report, which provides detailed statewide, regional and county travel impact estimates, found: — Visitors to Oregon generated $9.2 billion in revenue for the state in 2012. This 3.2 percent increase over 2011 was preceded by a 4.6 percent increase from 2010 to 2011. — Travel-generated employment increased for the second consecutive year, resulting in approximately 1,500 new jobs in 2012 and 1,600 new jobs in 2011, representing a 1.7 percent increase over 2011.

The state’s travel and tourism industry now employs more than 91,000 Oregonians. — Visitor air travel to Oregon destinations grew 7 percent in 2012, and room demand, as measured by Smith Travel Research, increased 2.6 percent. — The Gross Domestic Product of the Oregon travel industry was $3.4 billion in 2012, making it one of the three largest export oriented industries in rural Oregon counties. These findings show that the positive growth in Oregon is in line with national trends, where last year, domestic and international visitors injected $858 billion into the United States’ economy and directly supported nearly 5.5 million jobs.

The Oregon Tourism Commission, dba Travel Oregon, works to enhance visitors’ experience by providing information, resources and trip planning tools that inspire travel and consistently convey the exceptional quality of Oregon. The commission improves Oregonians’ quality of life by strengthening economic impacts of the state’s $9.2 billion tourism industry that employs more than 91,000 Oregonians. http://www.TravelOregon.com SOURCE Travel Oregon Photo:http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130404/SF89220LOGO http://photoarchive.ap.org/ Travel Oregon
