In a bid to push hospitality industry to the mainstream of government agendas, key stakeholders of UP hospitality sector met with senior officials of the UP Labour Department in Kanpur on Tuesday demanding a separate category for hotels within the department. Speaking exclusively to India Hospitality Review, Vijay Pandit, honorary secretary of Federation of Hotels & Restaurants Association of India and vice president of UP Hotel & Restaurant Association said, “As of now there are 59 categories within the UP labour department.

We want 60th category to be created to take care of the concerns of the hospitality industry wherein the person heading the department also hails from the hospitality industry.” Members of the UP Hotel Association submitted a proposal to the Lucknow Labour Department for approval after the meeting. “We are expecting to hear back tentatively after a week,” said Pandit. “If this proposal is approved, we will see ourselves in a position to facilitate better wages for our employees. We are already trying to provide above the industry standards but we think it can still go up only once government has a hands-on approach,” he added.

The meeting was attended by over 20 members including commissioner and additional commissioner of UP labour department, two other members from UP labour department and members of the state labour union. "This was a long pending move. We believe if it goes through as desired, it will benefit the industry and government as a whole," he said.
