NEWS | Yum! Restaurants eye smaller towns for expansion in India

Yum! Restaurants India, part of Yum! Brands Inc that owns KFC and Pizza Hut chains, is eyeing expansion in smaller towns as part of plans to double its outlets in Indian sub-continent to 1,000 by 2015. "We are encouraged to see very good response to our brand, not only in the big cities and metros but in the smaller towns. There, the consumers are aware of the brand because they have seen it on TV or travel to big cities. When we go there, they receive our brand very warmly,"
Yum! Restaurants India President Niren Chaudhary to PTI. The restaurant chain, which today opened its 500th store in Bangalore of its third brand Taco Bell, is planning to expand its foothold in tier 2 and tier 3 cities as the success rate of restaurants in those areas are high. "In KFC, when we are going to particular smaller towns, we are seeing a disproportionate success in these tier 2-3 towns, where the sales very often are higher than the sales in the larger cities... rentals are much lower in smaller town. Therefore, the model works very well," he said.
