Twelve hotels faced show cause notice from the Goa state pollution control board (GSPCB) for failing the board’s mandate of installing a facility to convert biodegradable waste generated by them.
In the first week of August, the board issued notices to 48 starred hotels to stop supplying food waste to piggeries, failing which necessary action would be initiated. The board had directed hotels to maintain machinery for converting biodegradable waste generated by them to compost.
After issuing the notices, the board conducted a surprise visit at 48 hotels and found that three hotels have fully complied with the direction, 33 hotels installed the machinery but were not composting waste and 12 hotels did not comply. The inspection report stated that the biodegradable waste generated by 12 hotels is being disposed off to piggeries, thus violating the provision of the Water (prevention and control pollution) Act, 1974, as well as violating the consent to operate issued to the hotels.
