Due to pollution levels rising in Beas river, National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered to close 34 hotels located in Kullu-Manali region along river banks stated a report by Anand Bodh in The Times of India.
Tribunal had found that these hotels were causing pollution in the river through dumping of waste material and other means. While conducting hearing in the case, Tribunal in Shimla found that these hotels had not obtained required permissions from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB).
The tribunal has directed SPCB to start the process and take action as required under the law with immediate effect. Tribunal has also directed the Member Secretary of Board to clarify what steps have been taken by hotels, which were granted sanctions, to dispose of the sewerage and municipal waste. Tribunal has found that Municipal Council Bhuntar had given the sanitation contract to a contractor, Prem Singh who was dumping the garbage directly into river for which he was even fined Rs 200. Tribunal has directed Prem Singh to remain present in the court in November.
It has also directed Deputy Commissioner Mandi, Executive Officer of Municipal Council Mandi and Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board to file a report on solid waste management by different projects before it. Source
