Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has passed a notice of motion to allow restaurants and shops to run round-the-clock, stated a report by Aditi Pai in The Times of India. BMC will now forward the proposal for Municipal Commissioner's approval and a sanction from the Urban Development and Labour Departments of the State Government.
The idea was mooted by Yuva Sena Chief, Aaditya Thackeray and presented in the BMC by Makrand Narvekar, Shiv Sena Corporator last week. According to the report, the hasty manner in which the proposal was cleared has made the opposition parties and critics raise their voice against the proposed 24x7 nightlife plan. From citing security issues to the concern of creating noise in residential areas, critics demand greater clarity on how the new regulation will be implemented. In the BMC, the opposition parties are not alone in their criticism.
Even a Shiv Sena Corporator expressed her concern over the proposal. "One the one hand, we are worried about the rising crimes against women even in broad daylight; if women stay till the wee hours of the night, do we have enough police personnel to man the streets at night," she said. Aaditya Thackeray had, last week, proposed that restaurants, shops and milk centers remain open round-the-clock to enable the city's working professionals to unwind even after their long work hours besides offering tourists a taste of a buzzing nightlife.
