The Monarch Group – whose investments span insurance, real estate and hospitality – is ramping up its portfolio with luxury facilities, which will see it spend up to $12 million (Sh1 billion) by August 2014.
It has set up Jambo Chester Hotels & Resorts, under which eight hospitality facilities spread across the country and Tanzania will be operated.
Monarch Group – associated with businessman and politician Jared Kangwana – owns Monarch Insurance and a raft of properties including The Mall-Westlands, Chester House and Communications Centre which houses the Royal Media Services group. It also owns Tamasha Corporation Ltd, a music production and distribution house.
Chester House, in the heart of the CBD, is being renovated into a full hotel offering from previous operations as fully furnished, serviced and self-catering apartments. It has 84 rooms, the largest of Jambo Chester Hotels & Resorts operations.
Its other completed facilities include Impala Ecolodge on Lake Victoria, Jambo Laikipia (Mutara Camp) and Golo Camp in Meru which open in December, and Jahazi-Bahari Resort in Watamu, which opens in February. Other luxury tented camps in the pipeline include Jambo Lake Nakuru Camp on the Delamere farm (June), Mara Camp, and Kilimanjaro Ecolodge across the Kenya-Tanzania border.
