13th Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble – 17, 18 & 19 September, 2014 - Event Report

Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, New Delhi brought together the Culinary Skills and Hospitality Knowledge of students from across India, to compete at The 13th Chandiwala Hospitality Ensemble (CHE 2014) from 17th September, 2014.






The National Level Event engaged the budding hospitality professionals in accelerated learning through various competitions namely - Cornitos Mexican Culinary Challenge, Taiga Japanese Culinary Challenge, Indian Festive Challenge, Zone Bar Wizard Bar Challenge, Bakery Young Chef Contest, Battle for the “Best” Chef, R-Pure Regional India Culinary Contest, Taj Hospitality Brain Twister, Crowne Plaza Okhla Hotel Facility Planning & Designing, Maggi Coconut Milk Powder Culinary Challenge “World Cuisine”, Floral Decoration Competition as well as Fruit & Vegetable Carving. Chief Guest for the opening ceremony, Chef Arvind Saraswat, Director, Food Production, Taj Sats Air Catering Ltd. (TSACL), while sharing the recipe for success mentioned, “To be outstanding in your field you should have distinctive skills, so that no one can challenge you.

 This Industry has tremendous potential which is yet to be explored. BCIHMCT will play its part in attaining this objective.” Ms. Viniti Bahl Sehrawat, Manager – Corporate Learning & Development, Taj Hotel, Resorts & Palaces, Mr. Parthajit Roy, Learning & Development Manager, Taj SATS and Mr. Kunal Sood, HR & Talent Manager, Crowne Plaza Okhla also graced the inaugural function. Mr. R.K. Bhandari welcomed the esteemed guests, sponsors, media partners, faculty members, participants and students of the Institute and thanked the enthusiastic gathering for gracing the occasion with their presence. He encouraged the participating teams by declaring them as winners and mentioned that learning from experiences brings the opportunities for going from Good to Great. 

The association of The Taj Group of Hotels and IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group) for this Mega Event has been a matter of pride for BCIHMCT. The valedictory function on September 19, 2014 commenced with the lamp lighting ceremony in the presence of Chief Guest Mr. Nikhil Sharma, Chief Operating Officer, Red Fox by Lemon Tree Hotels, Mr. Barun Jolly, General Manager, Crowne Plaza Okhla, Ms. Viniti Bahl Sehrawat, Manager – Corporate Learning & Development, Taj Hotel, Resorts & Palaces, Mr. Vikas Arora, CEO, Quiznos, Sub one Hospitality Service Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Yash Raghav, Training Manager, The Suryaa New Delhi, Ms. Jacqueline D'Almeida, Training Manager, Shangri-La's - Eros Hotel, Mr. Rajiv Ranjan, Supervisor-HR, Radisson Blu MBD, Noida and Mr. Bhuwan Mohan, Secretary, Shri Banarsidas Chandiwala Sewa Smarak Trust Society.

 Mr. Nikhil Sharma spoke to students about attitude, skills and knowledge being the most desired qualities for success in any industry, and participating in events like these helps in fuelling the budding hospitality professionals with the positive spirit.

 A cash prize of Rs. 5000 along with a trophy for the highest degree of innovation was given by Eclat Hospitality’s Mr. Prabhjot Bedi to Balabhiskeh from Regency College, Hyderabad. 

 The Gala Dinner hosted at the Valedictory Function was themed “CHATPATI DILLI KI CHATORI GALIYAN” recreating ambience with the halwais (sweet sellers), namkeenwallahs (sellers of savouries) and paranthewallahs (sellers of rich, flaky breads soaked in ghee) showcasing some classic dishes such as Chaat-Kachori, Aalan ka Saag, Moongochi, Aloo- Bedmi, Daulat Ki Chaat, Malpua and Kulfi Falooda. The sneak-peek of local “dhabas” was fashioned, allowing for the popular trend of dining at street food outlets. The list of winning colleges with first and second positions included Pioneer Institute Hyderabad, NSHM, Durgapur, GIHM, Hyderabad, CIHM, Chandigarh, Regency College, Hyderabad, IEC Greater Noida, AURO University, Regency College, Hyderabad, AISSMS, Pune, IIHMCA, Hyderabad, Renaissance College, Nainital along with BCIHMCT, the host Institute, which won 5 first positions, 2 second positions and 1 third position respectively. The participants honed techniques, skills and talent, for improved efficiency in various hospitality fields which is vital to the growth of Tourism and Hospitality sector. The competition provided an experiential learning opportunity to rising entrepreneurs looking to make their mark on hospitality Industry.

 CHE 2014 saw 34 hospitality colleges from across the country vying for the top position in the scheduled competitions during the three days. More than 800 food enthusiasts attended the award ceremony, which culminated in trophy presentations to all winners and presentations of certificates for participation.
