Singaporean Komala's to Open 10 Veg South Indian Restaurants By Dec 2010 In India.

The battle in vegetarian fast food space seems to be heating up with Komala’s Restaurants, a popular South Indian fast food chain from Singapore, set to mark its footprint in India. The firm has teamed up with Primary Cuisine as the master franchisee, to put in place a chain of at least 15 quick-dining outlets, kiosks across the country over the next couple of years, Gautam Shewakramani, director, business development, told Financial Chronicle.

Komala’s, currently has 10 restaurants in Singapore, with operations in Thailand,Malaysia, Indon esia and the Middle East. In India, Komala's will primarily take on Haldiram's in India to eat into the large veg fast food slice. Shewakramani said, “Those who travel abroad, should be familiar with the Komala’s. In India priority would be brand identification and then brand building.” “We are going to position Komala’s as a hygienic, value for money, authentic South Indian fast food chain in India,” he added.

Komala's Restaurants Franchises serve dosas, uttappams, pongal along with some North Indian favourites like Pulav, Biryani and a few desserts. Komala’s will open another three outlets by December 2010, mostly in Western and northern India and then in the next fiscal, the restaurant chain would open at least another 10 pan India. That will be the take-off stage, he said. “Although we have an aggressive expansion plans for India, we are not going too fast. That’s because we want to have a strong oversight, control and monitoring over the quality,” said Shewakramani. Komala’s concept is similar to that of western quick service restaurant chains.
