The liquor consumption data of the state released by Ministry of Finance, Government of Jammu and Kashmir revealed that as many as 120.75 lakh bottles of beer were sold in J&K in 2009-2010 compared to 90.08 lakh bottles in 2008-09.
As many as 15.33 lakh bottles of liquor were sold in the Kashmir in 2009-10 as against 11.48 lakh in 2008-09, the data said, adding that 11.44 lakh bottles were sold in the valley in 2007-08. Beer has emerged as the most favourite drink in Kashmir, where its consumption has increased by nearly 50 per cent, as it recorded sale of 7.62 lakh bottles in 2009-10, compared to 5.22 lakh bottles in 2008-09 and 5.23 lakh bottles in 2007-08.
In the Jammu region, beer consumption went up from 70.99 lakh bottles in 2008-09 to 99.61 lakh in 2009-10, it said, adding that in 2007-08, 73.78 lakh bottles were consumed in the region. However, in Ladakh region, beer consumption has shown a decline, where 13.52 lakh bottles were sold in 2009-2010, compared to 13.87 lakh bottles in 2008-09 and 13.62 lakh bottles in 2007-08. The consumption has increased despite the ban imposed by militant outfits on sale and consumption of liquor in the Kashmir valley in 1994.
