Jaipur Development Authority seizes Lakshmi Vilas Heritage Hotel

Complying with the Rajasthan High Court order, the enforcement wing of the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has seized Lakshmi Vilas Heritage Hotel in Jaipur. JDA evicted the occupants of the heritage property yesterday with 40 palatial rooms and put its own seal on it. The adjoining prime property Kanak Bhawan, too has been seized

According to a report in The Times of India, the Lakshmi Vilas was a popular tourist destination ever since it was converted into a heritage hotel in the early seventies. However, JDA had challenged sale of the two properties. Under Rajasthan State Land Acquisition Act, the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT), a wing of the state government, had in 1973 acquired 322-bigha land in Rambagh Complex for public utility. As per UIT claim, the above two structures were part of the 'acquired' 322-bigha land.

The JDA action came in response to the explanation sought by a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court in Jaipur as to why the previous court order was not complied with. The court had on May 10 ordered removal of 'encroachment' on properties on the Rambagh Complex premises. The court had also asked the government to take possession of Kanak Bhawan and Lakshmi Vilas Heritage Hotel, which are also on Rambagh Complex premises. The court passed the order on a PIL by Sanjay Tyagi, who had sought court intervention over JDA's failure in taking physical possession of the 'acquired' properties.
