Ireland to target 'more French tourists'

Ireland's tourism minister Mary Hanafin has travelled to Paris today (22 October) to help promote the country's tourism and cultural appeal to French tourists.

During 2009, nearly 400,000 French residents visited Ireland and Hanafin is looking to boost that number through a series of meetings and marketing events.

Hanafin said: "Despite difficult global economic conditions Ireland continues to enjoy a high level of interest amongst French holidaymakers.

"Many French visitors look to Ireland for its beautiful scenery and rich culture. Added to this will be a new emphasis on business tourism."

It comes after figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in late August revealed that the fall in the number of inbound visitor numbers had "slowed" during June 2010.
