Taj Hotel to pay Rs 25k penalty

CHANDIGARH: A penalty of Rs 25,000 was slapped on Taj Hotel by financial commissioner and deputy commissioner Brijender Singh for not maintaining proper records and using two underage employees to serve liquor on its premises.

The excise and taxation department had earlier suspended the liquor license of Taj Hotel for 10 days for the same violations. However, this order now stands revoked. The order was issued by collector, excise, Capt P S Shergill last week following raids conducted in the hotel in September. It was found that the hotel was not maintaining records in form L-23 (manual records) as required by law. Besides, a record of past inspections was not available and two bartenders were under 25 years of age.
