According to a report by Chittaranjan Tembhekar in Times of India, post March 2011, state excise duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) went up by 30-35 per cent. In addition, the year saw a 10 per cent increase in VAT. These taxes led to the liquor prices going up by 70-75 per cent. Hence, while some beer brands currently sell for Rs 65-70 per 650 ml, the cheaper brands of whiskey are still no less that Rs 200 for per quarter.
Earlier, IMFL enjoyed the lions share in New Year's Eve parties in Mumbai. In 2011, beer dominated in most areas in the city with IMFL as second choice, while a sizable number drank wine in the areas of Juhu, Napean Sea Road, Pedder Road, Andheri and Malad in Mumbai, said Arvind Miskin, Maharashtra Wine Merchants Association. AB Ghatol, Joint Commissioner of Excise, agreed with the preliminary observations of liquor merchants and bar owners that people drank more beer than IMFL on New Years Eve due to the steep rise in prices.
