NEWS | Hotels and resaurants root for lassi as national drink

India Hospitality Review India Hospitality Review daily newsletter A few days earlier, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia had said tea would be India’s national drink. Now the restaurants and hotels in Ludhiana have decided to promote lassi as the national drink and in a bid to make it more popular,
they are holding special festivals and launching new flavours of the same. According to a report by Indian Express, Park Plaza hotel has started the dhabha festival these days in which lassi is the hot selling item. “We have lassi available in the form of sweet and salted flavours and are also making flavoured lassi on demand,” said Umesh Yadav, food and beverage manager of the hotel. At Yellow Chillies, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s restaurant, a special lassi festival — ‘lassi jaisi koi nahi’ — has been started in which more than 15 varieties of lassi are available. Among them are strawberry lassi, adraki lassi, black current lassi and mint lassi. H S Kukreja, Director of the eating joint, says, “It is our way to promote this drink. Punjabis love lassi, and now it is for them to choose between lassi or tea.” At Westend mall, the bar, Brew Master, has also introduced two flavours of lassi. Gigabite and Express cafe at MBD mall already have lassi flavours but now their chefs are busy making an elaborate menu for the same.
