With Chennai entering into the top five preferred destinations for foreign travellers in India, the hotel room rents in the city have increased by seven per cent in 2012 compared to 2011.
According to hotels.com which released the price index review for the period from Jan-Dec 2012, the average price per room per night in Chennai had risen to Rs 6,386 in 2012 compared to Rs 5,985 in 2011.
“The increase in travellers to Chennai is primarily the reason for rise in hotel room rates. The demand is more than supply in Chennai,” said Rajiv Malhotra, marketing head of Hotels.com for Southeast Asia and India.
They travel to Chennai to reconnect with their roots. Similarly, they also come to Chennai for religious purpose including visiting temples,” he added.
Further, he noted that the direct flights provided by low-cost carrier AirAsia from Southeast Asian cities to Chennai is also a contributing factor for increased traffic flow in to the TN capital. “More people use Chennai as a gateway to India. There are multiple flights available from Chennai to other cities,” he pointed out.
