Hospitality Career E-Mag: NEWS | 32 restaurants in Kerala face closure notice over "poor hygiene"

The health department has issued closure notices to 32 restaurants in the Eranakulum district of Kochi for poor hygiene. Notices were issued to restaurants in a special drive conducted by the health department squads following the direction of the district panchayat to prevent infectious diseases. Squads inspected 40 restaurants, covering municipalities such as Kalamassery, Aluva, north Paravoor and Kizhakkambalam, Choornikkara and Cheranelloor grama panchayats.

The health department had earlier directed restaurants to serve only boiled water and store food items in clean environment .They were also asked to obtain health cards for employees. But many were found violating hygiene norms set by the health department. "The restaurants have been given seven days for taking corrective measures. If they fail to take necessary steps, strict action will be taken against them," said Ernakulam district health officer P N Sreenivasan. He added that raids would continue in the coming days.

In a bid to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases, local self-government (LSG) bodies were also asked by the district panchayat to convene ward-level meetings to review health and hygiene programmes. 10 eateries earlier in the capital town of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram got their Food Business Operator (FBO) licences suspended by the Special squads of Food Safety officials over a raid conducted in 147 establishments.The raids were conducted following an instruction from Food Safety Commissioner to ensure the 30 guidelines for cleanliness in hotels.
