NEWS| Intl| Ritz, Marriott Open in Jakarta 12 Days After Attacks
The Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott hotels in Jakarta opened amid “heightened” security, 12 days after suicide attacks killed nine people including the bombers.
The hotels, situated opposite each other in Jakarta’s upscale Kuningan area, resumed services at 10 a.m. local time today, Marriott International Inc., which manages both properties, said in a statement.
The biggest U.S. hotel chain said security had been “heightened even further as a precaution,” to reassure guests after Indonesia’s first terrorist attack in four years.

Jakarta Blasts| Editorial
When the Marriott Islamabad was bombed september last year, I wrote this on Bill Marriott's Blog.
Posted By: Prabhjot Bedi (9/21/2008)
Comment: Dear Mr. Marriott, I sit here in shock and join you in prayers for the departed souls & the injured people. I also have an uncomfortable question. Do you think Marriott Hotels is targeted (world over) or is it just that you have hotels at key locations across the world?
I never got an answer from Bill, but my comment was picked up by Indian Express in the article A window in the marriott
here a reproduction from that article
I am asking the same question today, as I asked a year ago.
Is Marriott being targeted?

Although the Pakistan Marriotts are not owned by the US-headquartered Marriott International Inc and only operate under licence, the chain and the brand are true symbols of Pan-Americana, with about 3,000 properties in 67 countries. And the group, which reported sales of $13 billion in 2007 is no stranger to terror and tragedy either. So much so that on the blog of Bill Marriott, chairman and CEO of the chain, there is a response to his posting after the Islamabad attack by Prabhjot Bedi that asks: “Dear Mr Marriott, I sit here in shock and join you in prayers for the departed souls & the injured people. I also have an uncomfortable question. Do you think Marriott Hotels is targeted (world over) or is it just that you have hotels at key locations across the world?”
Bedi is not much off the mark.

Jakarta Blasts Update| Bombing Suspects Spent Two Days at Hotel
The suspects in the two deadly bombings here Friday checked into one of the targeted hotels two days earlier and assembled explosives in their room, evading the kind of tight security that has helped convince foreigners it is again safe to do business in Indonesia.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, security video footage showed, a man wearing a cap and pulling a bag on wheels crossed the lobby of the JW Marriott, walking toward the restaurant. A flash followed, and smoke filled the air.
A few minutes later a blast went off at the restaurant of the Ritz-Carlton.
The lobby areas of both hotels were left a mangled mess of steel and glass, full of damaged furniture and other debris. The sidewalks outside were caked with blood.
The attacks appeared to be the work of highly capable bomb makers, security experts said. The investigation is focusing on Islamist terrorists, primarily, Noordin Mohamed Top, who is considered an expert bomb maker from Jemaah Islamiyah, a local affiliate of al Qaeda.
