Haryana government has put a blanket ban on Hookah bars in the state. The decision to close such bars has been taken after the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) found nicotine content in the samples collected from these bars. The department in the past week raided a number of Hookah bars and collected samples. According to Rakesh Gupta, Commissioner, FDA,
90 out of the 100 such samples collected found to be ‘nicotine positive’. With this ban, the government claims that Haryana has become the first Hookah-bar free state in the country. When contacted by Hospitality Biz, Manbir Chaudhary, President, Hotel & Restaurant Association of Haryana said that the blame ‘partially’ lies with the industry as some of these bars, mainly located in the retail malls in Gurgaon have become centres of illegal activities. "This has prompted the government to put a strict ban," he said.
